BYD Atto 3 Sourcing Guide for ASEAN Dealers: Used Import Math, Buyer Reality, EXW Cost

The Atto 3 is the most-imported Chinese EV in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam in 2026. Used 2022-2024 units clear at landed costs 18-25% below new VinFast equivalents. Here is the full sourcing guide — China supply, trim breakdown, battery health, EXW pricing, dealer margin math.

TL;DR

  • The Atto 3 is the entry SKU for ASEAN dealers building a Chinese-EV import business in 2026 — proven sales, real service network, accessible price point.
  • Used 2022-2024 units clear Sihanoukville landed at $14,500-19,500 USD depending on trim and mileage. Vietnam Hai Phong adds ~$800-1,200 to the same unit.
  • Customer fit: urban daily-drive buyers in Phnom Penh, Hanoi, HCMC, Vientiane. Range and charging infrastructure are no longer the bottleneck in these capitals.
  • Battery is the price-defining check: a State-of-Health (SoH) ≥88% retains resale; ≤80% drops 25-35% in trade-in value.
  • Margin math at $17,500 landed: target $22,500-24,500 dealer resale in Phnom Penh, $24,000-26,500 in Hanoi for clean 2023 units.

Why the Atto 3 specifically

Among Chinese EVs being imported into ASEAN in 2026, the Atto 3 is the brand-and-segment crossover that works for the most dealer customers. It is not the cheapest (Wuling Bingo is). It is not the most prestige (BYD Han is). It is the mid-market BEV with the cleanest supply curve, the broadest service-network coverage, and the most-recognized brand badge outside of Toyota and Tesla in our target markets.

This translates to:

  • Faster turnover than less-known Chinese EV SKUs (HVH Aion, Neta, Leapmotor).
  • Tighter trade-in pricing because the model has a public reference benchmark.
  • Lower buyer education burden — most prospective buyers have seen Atto 3 on the road in their city by 2026.

If you are starting a Chinese-EV import business, this is the first SKU to stock. If you already have an established Toyota/Honda business and want to add an EV anchor, this is the first SKU to add.

The vehicle: spec quick reference

The Atto 3 is a compact SUV / crossover EV built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, in production since early 2022 for China and exported globally since mid-2022.

Spec2022-2024 usedNotes
Body5-door SUV (4,455 mm length)Comparable to Toyota Corolla Cross / Honda HR-V

AC charge7 kW0-100% in ~9.5 hours
DriveFWD onlyNo AWD variant for this generation
Cargo440 L (seats up)Acceptable for daily-drive use

The Atto 3 was never a performance car. It was BYD’s bet that mid-market buyers wanted a quiet, comfortable, well-equipped EV at $25-30K new. That positioning translates well to year-3 used imports.

Trim levels you’ll see in Chinese auction stock

Domestic Chinese-market Atto 3 ships in three trims. Used-import inventory in 2025-2026 skews toward the middle trim:

TrimChina nicknameBatteryRangeUsed 2023 China retail (CNY)

The 410-km Active trim is the volume play for ASEAN imports — entry pricing aligns with what most Cambodia/Vietnam buyers will pay used. The Premium 60.5 kWh battery is the better long-term investment but the upfront cost stretches the resale ceiling.

The landed cost math (Sihanoukville example)

Worked example: 2023 BYD Atto 3 Boost (50.1 kWh, 510 km), 28,000 km, condition B+, sourced from Suzhou, shipped to Sihanoukville.

Cost lineUSD
Dealer purchase (China, used)$13,800
UCarsea margin + inspection + docs$1,400
EXW China (our quote)$15,200
Sea freight Shenzhen → Sihanoukville$850
Cambodia CIF$16,050
Import duty (35% × CIF for cars)$5,617
Special tax (15% × CIF×1.35 for EV — preferential rate)$3,250
VAT (10% on CIF×1.35×1.15)$2,490
Clearance + inland to Phnom Penh$580
Landed Phnom Penh~$27,987

The Cambodian EV preferential rate (15% special tax vs ~30-45% for ICE comparables) is what makes this math work. Same vehicle as a 2.0L gasoline SUV would land closer to $34-38K.

See the full duty mechanics in our Cambodia Used Car Import Duty 2026 breakdown.

The landed cost math (Hai Phong example)

Same 2023 Atto 3 Boost into Vietnam:

Cost lineUSD
EXW China$15,200
Sea freight Shenzhen → Hai Phong$720
Vietnam CIF$15,920
Import duty (45% × CIF)$7,164
Special consumption tax (EV preferential 3%)$693
VAT (10%)$2,377
Registration + clearance$850
Landed Hanoi~$27,004

Vietnam’s EV preferential SCT (3% vs ~35% for ICE) is the biggest single line-item advantage in the math. Cambodia and Vietnam both incentivize EVs structurally — your Atto 3 economics work because of this, not despite policy.

Dealer resale benchmarks (Q1-Q2 2026 observed)

What clean used Atto 3 units actually clear at, on the ground:

Market2022 (low km)2023 (low km)2024 (low km)
Phnom Penh dealer retail$20,500-23,000$22,500-25,500$26,000-28,500
Vientiane dealer retail$19,000-22,000$21,500-24,500$25,000-27,000
Hanoi dealer retail$22,500-25,500$24,500-27,500$28,000-31,000
HCMC dealer retail$22,000-24,500$24,000-26,500$27,500-30,000

A 2023 Boost trim with 25-30K km landing at $27,000 in Phnom Penh and clearing dealer retail at $23,500 leaves margin of roughly -$3,500 below cost on that single unit. The math breaks at that landed cost.

What actually works: source the same vehicle for $13,000-13,500 EXW (lower-mileage 2022 Active trim, or sharper purchasing through volume), keeping landed Phnom Penh around $24,500-25,500, and resale around $23K-25K. Margin then runs $0-2K plus you build a dealer relationship for repeat business.

The honest read: single-unit margin is thin on Atto 3 right now. This is a volume-and-relationship trade, not a high-margin trade. Dealers who buy 5-10 Atto 3 per quarter from a stable supplier earn through repeat ordering, not through hero margins on individual units.

The battery health check (the single most important inspection step)

A used Atto 3’s resale value tracks two numbers: mileage and battery State of Health (SoH). Mileage you can see on the dashboard. SoH requires either:

  • BYD diagnostic tool (dealer-only access in China)
  • Aftermarket OBD2 + AppCar / BYDLink mobile app reading
  • Empirical range test under controlled conditions

Acceptable SoH thresholds for export inventory:

SoH rangeStatusResale impact
≥ 92%Like-newPremium pricing, no concession
88-91%GoodStandard pricing
82-87%Fair-10 to -15% concession to buyer
75-81%Marginal-20 to -30% concession, disclose to buyer
< 75%AvoidDo not import — battery replacement risk

LFP cells (Blade battery) hold up well — most 2022-2023 Atto 3 units we inspect run SoH 88-94% even at 50-80K km. The outlier risks are:

  • Vehicles used as ride-share / fleet (high cycle count)
  • Vehicles stored long-term in hot climates (less common in Eastern China sourcing)
  • Vehicles with prior accident damage to the pack (visible in CarFax-equivalent records)

We refuse to EXW-quote Atto 3 units with SoH below 82% — the dealer ends up explaining it to a frustrated buyer at year 2 and the relationship sours. It is not worth $300 of saved purchase cost.

Customer profile that converts on Atto 3

Don’t sell the Atto 3 to everyone. The right buyers in 2026:

  • Urban daily commuter in Phnom Penh, Hanoi, HCMC, Vientiane — 30-50 km/day, home charging available.
  • Tech-aware professional under 45 — comfortable with EV operation, infotainment expectations match what Atto 3 delivers.
  • Replacement buyer for a Camry / CR-V / Vios that is at 200K+ km — running cost differential pays for itself in 18 months at typical city driving rates.

Don’t sell to:

  • Long-distance / inter-province buyers — 350 km real-world range hits a wall on highway use.
  • First-time car buyers in tier-2/3 cities without charging infrastructure.
  • Buyers who want a Camry-equivalent prestige signal — the Atto 3 is read as “smart practical buyer,” not “successful executive.”

Calibrating which dealer customers you push Atto 3 to (vs Han / Camry / Geely Coolray) matters more than any other sales decision.

Service and parts depth at year 3

BYD opened its first Phnom Penh authorized service center in 2024 and its first Vientiane center in 2025. Vietnam has had Hanoi and HCMC coverage since 2023. The Atto 3-specific service depth:

  • Brake and suspension: standard wear items, available in 1-3 days through BYD authorized network.
  • HV battery service: dealer-only, sometimes 1-2 week parts wait for cell-level work.
  • Infotainment unit: replacement units available, but software updates lag China-domestic by 3-6 months.
  • Drive unit (motor + inverter): well-supported under BYD’s 8-year/150,000 km HV warranty (warranty does not transfer to second buyer on a private re-import — disclose this).

When the Atto 3 is the wrong answer

For the rare cases when Atto 3 is not your right SKU:

  • Buyer wants prestige sedan: BYD Han is the next step up.
  • Buyer wants budget entry EV: Wuling Bingo / BYD Dolphin work at the $10-14K landed band.
  • Buyer wants ICE SUV: Haval H6 or Geely Coolray hit similar price tiers.
  • Buyer wants long-range highway car: Geely Geometry C with 600 km battery, or a hybrid like Toyota Camry HEV.
