Sourcing from China for Abidjan, Dakar and Douala: What Francophone West Africa Gets Wrong

Francophone West Africa buys almost entirely through European and Japanese channels, largely out of habit. Chinese domestic stock is left-hand drive from the factory, priced in the same band, and almost nobody in the region is importing it directly.

Walk a lot in Abidjan, Dakar or Douala and the supply story is the same everywhere: Belgium, France, Germany, with Japanese units filling the middle. The channel exists because it has always existed — freight lanes, familiar paperwork, brokers everyone already knows.

Chinese domestic stock barely appears. That is a habit, not a conclusion.

Why the fit is better than it looks

Left-hand drive from the factory. This is the point most people miss. China drives on the right, same as every francophone West African market. No conversion, no compliance argument, no reworked dashboard. The car left the production line configured for the roads you sell into.

Compare that with the Japanese channel, where right-hand-drive stock either gets converted — badly, usually — or gets sold into the markets that accept it.

The price band matches. The volume that moves on a lot in Abidjan or Dakar sits in the ten-to-twenty thousand dollar range. That is precisely where Chinese domestic used supply is deepest: three-to-six-year-old sedans and crossovers traded between dealers as running vehicles, not as insurance write-offs.

Not auction damage. Chinese domestic used cars change hands between dealers with service history attached. When we send an inspection report it documents a car, not a repair estimate. That is a different proposition from the salvage-heavy end of the European re-export trade.

Where China is genuinely better value

Two categories stand out for this region:

Hybrids. Petrol prices across the region have reset what a working family can afford to run. Chinese buyers moved on to full electric and left hybrid sedans behind, so three-to-five-year-old hybrids now price against ordinary petrol used cars. A Toyota hybrid drivetrain is the most-produced hybrid system in history — the petrol engine is a conventional Toyota engine any competent mechanic services, and regenerative braking means brakes last dramatically longer.

Non-Japanese badges. Pickups, Isuzu, European models built in China. Japan’s domestic pool for these is thin, which pushes Japanese export prices up. China has real depreciation on them.

Where China is not better: recent Land Cruiser and Prado. Those are scarce and expensive in the Chinese market. Buy them from Japan and we will say so.

What actually stops deals

Three things, in our experience:

  1. Documentation for customs. Requirements differ between Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Cameroon and the wider UEMOA/CEMAC zones, and they move. Confirm the current requirement with your clearing agent for your vehicle category before you commit to a unit.
  2. Vehicle age limits. Several markets in the region cap the age of imported vehicles. Check the current limit for the model year you are buying — not the one from two years ago.
  3. Port choice and inland transit. Abidjan, Dakar and Douala each have their own realities, and landlocked destinations behind them change the maths entirely. Your freight agent has better numbers here than we ever will.

We will not pretend to be the authority on your customs code. What we do is remove the uncertainty on our side of the water.

How we quote

Every quote has the same shape: EXW China + China-side handling and loading + sea freight to your port — one written CIF number, fixed at booking. Duties and clearing stay on your side.

Before you commit to a unit you get its inspection report, full photo set and mileage record. If a car has repair history, that history is in the report. We would rather lose a sale than have a dealer discover a problem on the dock.

Dealers in Abidjan, Dakar, Douala, Bamako, Ouagadougou: tell us the segment your buyers actually ask for and the price band that works on your lot. We will send three matching units with photos and EXW pricing each. No catalogue spam, no obligation.
